NIKON D5000 (6)

Second article of the week-end!

I bought my first DSLR 4 days ago, it's a Nikon D5000.

As I don't have the skill to make a technical critic of the beast, I simply show what I could do with it.

I mainly used the scene selection. You can choose from 11 different pre-selected settings.

I never used a DSLR before and I was little bit worried, but what I have here makes me quite happy for now.

I am sure the DSLR veterans will notice some horrible mistakes though...

I set-up to 500px the width of each photos for the blog, but you can find the 1024px photos on my Zooomr.
I am afraid that the pictures are also over compressed from the originals, we lose a lot. I have to think how to fix this.

Maybe I have to give more space to the photos in the articles also... 500px is really too small to appreciate the DSLR shots.

For now I have only one lens, as I bought the basic kit with the 18mm-55mm lens.

It costs about 100000 yens at Yodobashi Camera, but having 20000 points on my card, I paid "only" 80000 yens which was kind of a limit I imposed to myself.

For the Keirin (cycling race) shot, I was too far so I did the zoom after in iPhoto, that's why the quality is so-so on this one.

(it's not my house if you wonder ... ^_^;)

With the camera I also received some software to install but still did not check them...

Do people use the software provided by the camera makers? Or use only Adobe or Mac softwares?

There's also a video mode on the camera but I did not try it too much, so nothing "interesting" to show for now. It seems to be the weak point of this camera if I trust all the critics, but I think it will be more than enough for my "needs".

My favorite is the one with the bicycle race. Never mind the sharpness, it has beautiful colors and you captured an interesting moment (the last two cyclers). :)

As for your question on software, I'm a Nikon user myself (D90) and as I never was a fan of Adobe, I use now Capture NX2.

Thanks! I like also the keirin one, next time I'll go, I will try to shoot from the field with a more proper lens. It should be interesting!

Nice work. May I suggest that you read Ken Rockwells Nikon blog. Just google it.Great blog for owners of Nikon and he has lens suggestions. I would recommend you read his thoughts on the 18-200 zoom lens.

6 MONTHS

After 6 months away from the blog, I was not sure where to start again. I'm going for the easy solution :  a summary of these 6 past months.I use also this blog to remember what I've been up to and these past months were quite busy, so it's time to write it down before I forget...France  :For the first time in 4 years we went back to France to spend Christmas and New Year's Eve. A full month trip! I was very excited to go back to meet friends and family. Still over Japan, one girl... Read more

CP+ CAMERA AND GIRLS SHOW IN YOKOHAMA

Okay I am lying a bit, the real title is "CP+  Camera and Photo Imaging Show" :-)It was about one month ago and it was the first time I visit such an event dedicated to cameras. It turned out there was no major announcement concerning new cameras or gears but it was a nice afternoon among camera hobbyists and pros.Very difficult to tell who are the pros and who are the amateurs... Japan is not the country of photography for nothing and some amateurs possess gears that other pros can only dr... Read more

FREELANCE IN JAPAN AND NEW MAC BOOK PRO

After a little bit more than 3 years at Samurai Factory, I am now working as a freelancer (the ultimate goal is to be able to work from anywhere but that's an other story). I first thought it would be difficult for a gaijin (foreigner) but as long as you have a proper visa it is really easy. It might have been more difficult in my own country ! Even if I am a married guy with a Japanese national I am still holding my engineer visa which is valid until the end of this year. Surely I will swi... Read more

CGM NIGHT AT AKIHABARA

I could not attend the last CGM Night organized by Danny and Andrew so it was a while that I met some of my "CGM comrades". This time was a special Dollfie and Cosplay edition. I am pretty sure everyone knows what cosplay is. Dollfie, I am not sure. I am myself not familiar with it, but dollfie is a composition of "doll" and "figure", I guess the photos are quite explicit ;) It is quite popular in the Otaku world and not only for what I 've understood, more and more people seem to "fal... ABOUT TABLETS AND THE IPAD

I've read a lot about the iPad. Mostly either the authors point at the lack of functions to bash the product or on the contrary we have the fan boys comments. But I have yet to read someone describing what he would do with it or could not do with it and why. I am going to try that. Don't expect anything too much technical here though. Between September 2005 and June 2006, I had in my hands a TabletPC. The model was a Fujitsu and to go with it, was a blue-tooth keyboard and a [big] dock... Read more
