FUJI PROJECT - TRAINING (6)

Training is going on pretty well. Yes, the heat makes it harder but anyway it will be hot also on d-day. I do running, cycling and even some swimming sessions. Cross training is the best to get back in shape without hurting your body with repetitive routines. With cross training all our muscles got involved one day or an other so one can get in shape in a smoother and less traumatic way.
I start to feel better and better. Saturday I took the Fuji Track Comp and rode from Yokohama where I live to Tokyo - Harajuku where I currently work. I always wondered how long it would take. On the map it is only about 30km. A distance I can ride in less than one hour easily when in the countryside, but in an urban environment it is totally different, obviously.

You can't keep a pace and just ride. You have to constantly be careful of the traffic, pass the cars that are bumpers to bumpers, stop at many lights, restart (my ratio was 48x15). So imagine with the heat and the dust it is kind of a nervous ride. Plus I was carrying my messenger type bag… (I am going to buy a more suitable little backpack for cycling, maybe something with a soft bottle inside, camelbak style. Any advices ?)

Short break on the Tamagawa bridge, which separate Tokyo and Kanagawa prefectures.

One of my other stops was Komazawa Park, a first time to go there for me (thanks to Alban for the tip). A real sports mecca, many runners, baseball players, skaters, fixed gear fellows etc… I'd like a place like this in Yokohama… Is there one?
The result is that 30km felt (and took) much longer than what I thought but I did it :)

At the UltraSuperNew office in Meijijingumae. Time to go back to Yokohama.

To find my way I used the function on Runkeeper that allows you to create routes on google maps, it is very useful especially coupled with the iPhone as you can check where you are. Alas the iPhone battery could not stand the whole ride and on the way back around Jiyugaoka it was out of energy…no more gps. damn…
So I just used the good old method, and asked two times my direction to people.
Arrived at Kikuna I made a mistake and continue to follow the main road instead to take the same shorter way as earlier in the opposite way. As you can see at km 23 (+30km), I had to climb a steep road, very hard with the 48x15 but at least it was a good training for the Fuji San :)

Yokohama - Fuji San

By the way, today I think I decided the way I'll take on d-day. From Yokohama I'll cross Kanagawa Prefecture to reach Gotemba and then make it to the 5th base of Fujinomiya. It is the southern start for the climb of Fuji San, and the shortest way to reach the top as well. From Yokohama to Fujinomiya it is about 112km. Good warm up before the climb :) If anybody thinks this way is a wrong choice, please tell me!
Next saturday I plan to ride from Yokohama to Gotemba (you can spot it on the map), about a 80 km ride (if my route is correct). I will stop just before the hard  mountain part. I'll then take a train to get back home for this time.

Fuji family, blue Feather and red Track Comp, the old rivalry between the red bike ad the blue bike ;-)

Wow, we rode the coast route through Chigasaki and then on to Odawara before climbing to Hakone... I bet the road you mean to Gotanda is beautiful - think I might have been on some of it in the car before... I'm going to keep checking your progress, very interested!

By the way, are those Panaracer 'tricolore' tyres on your 'feather'? Look nice! (and patriotic!!)

I was first thinking of going to Kamakura and then along the sea until Odawara but then as you said there's Hakone ... And I think I want to avoid as much as possible Hakone on this day, probably harder than the climb to Fuji San 5th station itself...

As for the road to Gotenba (not Gotanda ;-) I will tell you next week but I bet the traffic must be quite dense in the summer :/

You're right for the panaracer tires. I bought them recently, nothing really patriotic there though, just a nice classic colour combination :p

Jerôme, give the direct link to your runkeeper profile. Like this we can follow your training and progress before the Fuji challenge. It is also quite interresting for whoever wants to see how much preparation is needed for your performance.

OSAKA CYCLEMODE 2011 - TRIATHLON BIKES

Last Saturday I took the train at 6AM for a day in Osaka, needless to say it is very unusual I wake up before the sun in Japan but that was worth it.My plan was to visit the Cyclemode show in Osaka. Previous years you could see on my blog that I visited the Tokyo edition. Now I live closer to Osaka, plus that was a good opportunity to visit a little bit the city again. My first steps in Japan were in Osaka in 2005 but I haven't been back since then! Anyway I took of course lots of pics at t... Read more

RANDOM BICYCLES FROM 2011

I just found this folder of pics that I collected through the year. As I am living now in the countryside I have, needless to say (way) less opportunities to stumble upon cool bikes... So this kind of post might get seriously rare on this blog... unless someone is willing to share his bikes shots from any city of Japan! I would totally accept someone to post here if he wants... The blog is still very well ranked in google for searches about tokyo/japan and fixed gears/fixie etc etc... I am more... Read more

HILL CLIMB IN DAISEN - BICYCLE RACE

Results here : Hill Climb in Daisen - ResultsOn October 16, I took part in the Hill Climb in Daisen. An event organized by the Tottori Cycling Association. Not officially a race, as the road was not closed [there was one place where you might have to stop : there was one traffic light… I was lucky, in a good timing…], but anyway I can tell you there was a bunch of us who took it as a race :-)Goal was pretty simple : start from Odake Castle [a big hotel] and ride up the hill during 14k. For those... Read more

TRIATHLON TRAINING, THE FIRST 2 MONTHS

Already more than 2 months have passed since I've started to train again.First month I focused on short distances on running, with 7 sessions around 5-6 km just trying to keep a constant rhythm but never trying to push it. I also added 6 cycling trainings and just one swim training. The goal was to reboot the body, sort of speaking, I just followed my feelings and never cared so much about the speed. I was just enjoying my return to the sport (I still do).I train often around Togo lake with my bi... Read more

TRIATHLETE EQUIPMENT ROOM - NOT MINE THOUGH :-(

Just a short post before to go to bed for the equipment geek among us :I stumbled upon this video today. Helle Frederiksen, pro-triathlete from Denmark presents us her equipment room, quite impressive (if you are into endurance multi-sports that said...)Now I wonder how she can keep it so clean! :-) Read more
